Well, the question is still a little vague, since you didn't specify what
you're interested in. On the other hand, it seems that you want to start
with something and don't know how to start.
Well, the first thing as you may have noticed is to pick something you want
to do. Each one of us will give you a different story about how or what they
do in regards to free software or open source or specifically Linux.
I can't answer much about the admin work since i am a programmer and often
do my own admin work which is kept to a minimum mostly. However, if you
want to start in the free software world, you can always start with bug
wrangling. If you're a fan of ubuntu, there are a ton of bugs to help
with.(visit launchpad)
Otherwise, if you want to start a new project, post it here and we can help.
Like Abdallah said, we are best at answering specific questions and solving
specific problems instead of answering with an essay or lecture such as this
one :)
I can't answer for everybody, but i am always up for an interesting project.
