What is your "field" if I may ask? oh, scuba, cool. So why not start a
linux-scuba related project and work on that, I'm sure it'll give you plenty
of learning opportunities, and you'll get answers on actual questions you
ask about. Instead of asking "how do I learn", you'll be asking "how do I do
so and so". People are more inclined to answer the later question more.

Due to my inexperience in the field it would be impossible for me to find

I got paid for programming work after learning gw-basic out of a book and
writing a small script a week later. I think many here have a similar
experience. So don't get discouraged.

So I am hoping there is someone out there that needs a hand, and I am sure
