Oh, I stumbled on this script yesterday while fixing my new laptop:

I hadn't installed e17 on the machine yet and it sounded good, so I
let the easy_e17.sh run for a while, and voila, after a couple of
hours (of getting the whole cvs tree) everything was up and running
smoothly.

If you haven't installed e yet, that's really the "easy" way to do it.
