Dear Alaa,
I apologize for not replying sooner as I was attending a meeting abroad
since last Sunday and I had problems using the ESCWA webmail.
I am grateful for taking the time and discussing our request at your
meeting. The project consists of donating a number of older computers to
local communities in Lebanon. As no budget is allocated to the project, I
did some research to find open-source Linux OS that would run confortably
on the donated PCs. As I am unfamiliar with the Linux operating environment,
and how to install applications, I requested guidance. However, there is no
fund for hiring a consultant.
I appreciate the help offered by one of your members, and I estimate the
task won't be long nor difficult as I have experience in IT.
Thank you again
Imad Sleiman

Re: [leglug-users] Running Linux on old PCs
Dear Imad,
I brought up your request at our meeting and what follows are the results:
- The list can only help you with specific questions and can provide
you with directions to documentation according to the experience of its
members
- None of the people(except 1) attending the meeting were interested
in volunteering due to various reasons. The most prevalent being lack of
time or interest.
- One person might be interested in volunteering but on a very limited
time basis. His name is Ghaith and so he can contact you privately if he
decides to go ahead with that.
Another point was that some of us work on project contracts(as freelancers)
and so volunteering on such a project is not possible unless it is a
commercial project itself(meaning there is some kind of compensation or
recognition) or it would lead to forthcoming commercial contracts. This is
another main reason for the lack of interest(it is also my case), we spend
most of our time on these commercial projects which leaves very rare
precious moments of free time.
The list and all people involved are CC'ed in this email, so if someone
would like to correct me or has a different opinion, then feel free to speak
up.
Regards,
Alaa Salman

Dear Imad,
Your request will be brought up on our next meeting(which you're welcome to
attend by the way), and either Abdallah or I will inform you about the
results.
For the mailing list, i believe you have to be subscribed to send letters to
it.

Dear Alaa,
I would very much like to work with a group of volunteers as was suggested
by Abdallah to find a solution to the problem at hand. I can't communicate
with the rest of you as I cannot use the community group mailing address (my
message was rejected).
Best regards

For anybody following this thread.
I didn't see any reply for this request, but if you or Imad would like to
make a request of the group, i am sure we can discuss this at our next
meeting(which would be very soon) and perhaps come up with a plan or
volunteers.

Guys,
Thank you for your comments so far :)
I would like to stir this conversation in another direction if I may.
would any of you be willing to help these guys out on their quest by
doing one or more of the following:
1- Test the software (on specified hardware)?
2- Work with them on creating a list of software that's useful/working
for the target system/audience?
3- Make an installation CD (based on recommended distro [ubuntu?] that
they can use on that hardware (unassisted) ?
4- Help customize/optimize the system for: Arabic, Office Software,
Educational Software, etc...
If you have the time, it's a good project, and it's worth the elbow
grease + I'm sure Mr. Sleiman would be happy to organize the effort
