the distro recommendation will always be arround 256mb but you can
turn off excess deamons and unload unecessary modules (drivers) that
way you can cut down ubuntu or suse to fit to 128 with ease. what you
need to do first is switch to a very light windows manager such as
fluxbox/blackbox/xfce as those have a small footprint in ram.
this way you can use the common distros with a little finetuning
tweaking to optimize and fit to that hardware.

128mb is enough to run linux + desktop + web/office apps
