thought of typing something before going of on vacation,

now if you want you can download the tcpdump source files and compile it on
your system.
you can find it at www.tcpdump.org

now there are somethings that need to be cleared,
broadcom 97% of the time is a well functioning chipset,

you need to tell us now what kind of jam you are experiencing,
1- do you have any data moving?
2- does data move for a while and jam after?
3- have you reompiled the proper driver modules for the nic instead of using
the default?
4- have you compared whether this is occuring on an identical system?

starting from the bottom,

1- check the chipset version you have and download the correct drivers
compile and install
2- make sure you dont have any broken packages, this you can do simply but
just testing your whether you can access the network with your wireless
interface.
3- manually load the driver with insmod command,
4- manually configure the interface such as: ifconfig eth0 192,168.1.10netmask
255.255.255.0 up
4.5- to make sure that your nic is handshaking properly, use ethtool to set
it to fixed 100mb full autoneg off!!!!! and do the same on your hub/switch
5- if you have a gateway to access other ip segments then add it with the
route add command.
6- if you have allready got tcpdump to work start it up!
7- test by performing whatever browsing tasks.www telnet ssh or whatever
mean you want and follow up tcpdump.

if you have done the above properly and yet it all fails, revert and try
knoppix
if knoppix is able to use your laptop without issues, then you ubuntu OS is
broken
if knoppix fail, then your hardware is malfunctioning or requires the
model/type specific tweak for the drivers to work normally
(i once had a compaq desktop that wouldnt get on the network without a
specific brand hub in between and a specific NIC on the system, and even
then only at 10mb half duplex.
i was not able to get any support from anywhere and i attempted all tweaks
of compiling the kernel and drivers but all in vain, after three days of
continous struggle i gave up on the hardware only being able to deduce that
it had something to do with the bus drivers failling on linux as it worked
seamlessly with windows. this was almost 6 years ago and still havent heard
of similar cases or what was the actual reason, so it can be your whole
distro and it can be your hardware)

but start first by testing with a knoppix cd/dvd
if all works then you know for sure its your distro that is broken, it can
be missing an individual package, it could be wrongly compiled or not
compiled against the latest libraries and kernel..
or then again it could be the kernel version is not stable with your
hardware. trial and error is your friend in order to take a shortcut on
this.. knoppix knoppix knoppix....
